Webinar presentation, 75 minutes
Language: English
In this webinar, Rinata Kazak, PhD, Lecturer at Linköping University will present the project “Reshaping Ecocide in International Law” funded by Formas. Her work addresses a critical gap in international law and current geopolitical turbulence: how should the large-scale destruction of ecosystems, coined as ecocide, be understood and prosecuted within the legal frameworks at the national level and globally?
In the presentation, focus will be on how the Russian invasion of Ukraine has highlighted severe environmental destruction and how such damage currently falls through the cracks of international law. She will also share current examples of alleged ecocide, including environmental devastation in Ukraine, to illustrate how existing legal systems struggle to address these harms. Using this war as a case study, she tries to explore how international criminal law could evolve to include ecocide – and what that would mean for global justice, accountability, and green transformation.
The talk will also share early insights from her project’s two main research tracks: one that maps global perceptions of ecocide, and one that analyzes its legal feasibility and potential impact.
